Rock Court with El Duce

Well, here is one of the episodes I consider an award winner. The late, great Eldon B. Hoke aka El Duce is represented here in all of his glory. During the Cathay de Grande days, we would always kick around the idea of Duce coming up to the show and taking the piss out of all the hair bands that were around in those days. So we created the Rock Court concept and the rest is history. As usual, there was no date written on the tape so I’m going to guess that this took place circa 1985. I’m still going crazy trying to find a tape of the ultimate El Duce appearance on the Final Countdown - an outrageous Mentors interview that got me so much heat with the LMU Jesuit administration it damn near got me thrown off the air. As soon as I find it you know it’s going up here asap. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this one. FYI, the live Mentors tracks played on the show all came from the Mystic Records release ‘Mentors Live at the Whisky/Cathay De Grande’ (MLP 33107).

OK…here is side 2 of more obscure prank calls. The tape starts off with a brief snippet of a trumpet player telling Buddy Rich to go to hell right on the bandstand. This leads into a classic confrontation between two 7-11 employees (one real and one not so real). The rest of the tape contains the hijinx of the one and only Marky St. James, a Sunset Strip hair band vocalist who calls unsuspecting musicians that have placed ads in local music rags. Too much!

Hello everyone. It’s obviously been WAY too long since I’ve posted anything up here. After months of procrastination, I’ve decided to work up the courage to re-enter the insect laden, cobweb encrusted storage shed that houses most of the old Final Countdown tapes. I hope you folks realize the health hazards I am risking to bring you the best (and worst) of mid-80’s independent HC/Metal radio. So - to tide you over while I undertake this new expedition into the unknown, I’ve decided to post a couple of episodes featuring my favorite prank calls of the last 20 years. Although great in their own right, there are no Jerky Boys or Tube Bar bits here. Instead, you get to hear the saga of little Chun Nguyen, a Cambodian refugee whose sponsors are desperately (and hilariously) trying to place into a home in Garden Grove. As a bonus, you also get the ‘Alpha Beta Secret Admirer’ bit. More stuff on Part 2. Tons of thanks to Elise Thompson for turning me on to this tape many years ago! Hope you dig it…

Circle Jerks Interview

Greetings all…it’s been a while. I’m back after discovering some more tapes in the cobweb filled storage shed. This time around we have the Circle Jerks coming to the KXLU studios to promote the release of the ‘Golden Shower of Hits’ album. The lineup at the time consisted of Keith Morris, Greg Hetson, Earl Liberty and Chuck Biscuits. Although this version of the Jerks didn’t last long, I always thought they were the best live unit. I remember a gig at Perkin’s Palace where they totally tore it up. So sit back by the yuletide log and enjoy the antics of the Circle Jerks on another episode of Final Countdown Classics. The tape was donated to the Final Countdown archives by the great Dave Markey, autuer of cinematic epics such as ‘Desperate Teenage Lovedolls’ and ‘The Year Punk Broke’, co-creator of the pioneering HC fanzine We Got Power as well as drummer for Sin 34 and Painted Wille. In addition to the Final Countdown, which aired at either 11PM or Midnight, I also had an afternoon ‘drive’ shift on KXLU. One day (April 29, 1985 to be exact), photographer Glen E Friedman called and said that he had the Beastie Boys with him and he was wondering if he could bring them by the station for an interview. I thought ‘What the hell’ and told him to swing on by. They had just released their debut 12″ for Def Jam that contained the tracks ‘Rock Hard’ and ‘Beastie Groove’. Lots of interesting moments as the Beasties basically clown around for the duration of their visit. Highlight is a ‘live’ version of Beastie Groove. Greetings deaf ones. Here’s a nice bit. At the time, this was a huge score for me. An interview with the kings of black metal, Venom. It was conducted poolside on the patio of a rundown Huntington Beach motel on April 17, 1985. Abaddon and Cronos did most of the talking while Mantas did laps in the pool and shouted out occasional phrases. They were in town to play a show at the Palladium along with Slayer and Exodus. The tape recorder I used picked up every external noise including helicopters and splashing water so you might have to strain to hear some passages. But it’s worth it because Abaddon talks some pretty good smack. Well hope you all enjoy it and thanks for listening… ~OG Adam Bomb

Raleigh, North Carolina’s COC drop by the studio circa January 1985 for their second visit to The Final Countdown. This is between the ‘Eye for an Eye’ and ‘Animosity’ albums and they were actually in town to work on the ‘Animosity’ record with Metal Blade’s Bill Metoyer. COC were always great guests and one of the first non-local bands to visit the show. Appearing were Reed Mullin, Woody Weatherman, Mike Dean and Simon Bob Sinister (Ugly Americans). I guess the appearance was kind of prophetic because Simon Bob would later join the band as lead vocalist. There’s a cool Johnny Valiant interview in here as well…thanks for listening.

Now this one’s slanted a bit towards the pro wrestling camp. If you are at all familiar with the game, you know that Dr. Jerry Graham was one of the great names of the late 50’s and 60’s, particularly in the Northeast where he would sell out Madison Square Garden on his name alone. The good doctor loved life and often lived it beyond the fullest. He knew the ups and downs of life very well. He went from lighting cigars with $100 bills to living in a Glendale flophouse with one bathroom at the end of the hall. One afternoon my friends Kurt Brown, Fisico Nuclear and I went to visit him. When he finally answered the door, he was clad only in tiny underwear and the room reeked of gin. Sitting on top of the dresser was a 3/4 empty gallon of Tanqueray and an open box of Cheerios. He spent quite a while getting dressed and ready, then we went to the Round Table across the street, ordered 2 large pies and 3 pitchers of Bud. We had maybe a 1/3 of one of the pitchers and the Doc drank the rest. He spun one tale after another and almost cried with joy when he recounted the time that Johnny Valentine took a shit on Don Leo Jonathan while he slept in his motel room. We miss you Doc…RIP.

Here’s something I thought about posting for a while. If you are at all familiar with college radio, you know that a certain amount of funding is provided by the institution. Anything above and over that needs to be culled from other financial sources. Thus, the KXLU fundraiser. They happened once a year and I dreaded doing it. I HATED shilling for money but it was a required thing and the station expected you to do it. This broadcast was my first year doing it so I wanted to make sure I got it right. My guests for the show were Jordan Schwartz (We Got Power Fanzine), Dave Markey (We Got Power/Sin 34) and Philco (Mystic Records). If you listen, you can tell I’m stressed out…normally it was a circus when Jordan and Dave were up there but this time I was gettin’ $eriou$. Hope you dig it…send your comments…

Welcome to the debut episode of Final Countdown Classics. Thanks to my incredibly accurate record-keeping (not), I believe this show was broadcast sometime in late 1985. Appearing on the show were Suicidal’s leader Mike Muir, along with Louiche Mayorga, Rocky George and Ralph Herrera. A highlight of the show is a rare, unreleased version of ‘War Inside My Head’ recorded live at The Ritz in New York City. Enjoy…

UPDATE: Sorry about the confusion here, but I just found the tape with the first part of this interview (I thought it was lost forever). Therefore there is some shuffling going on around here but hopefully it won’t get too confusing.
