Rock Court with El Duce
Well, here is one of the episodes I consider an award winner. The late, great Eldon B. Hoke aka El Duce is represented here in all of his glory. During the Cathay de Grande days, we would always kick around the idea of Duce coming up to the show and taking the piss out of all the hair bands that were around in those days. So we created the Rock Court concept and the rest is history. As usual, there was no date written on the tape so I’m going to guess that this took place circa 1985. I’m still going crazy trying to find a tape of the ultimate El Duce appearance on the Final Countdown - an outrageous Mentors interview that got me so much heat with the LMU Jesuit administration it damn near got me thrown off the air. As soon as I find it you know it’s going up here asap. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this one. FYI, the live Mentors tracks played on the show all came from the Mystic Records release ‘Mentors Live at the Whisky/Cathay De Grande’ (MLP 33107).

Man I love these shows and have been praying for you to post more…. hope there are lots more to come….. I really wish we had had a radio show like this where i grew up (Sydney, Australia) in the 80’s - we had cool independent radio but noone was really doing a great HC show like this! One thing I’d say is that is that if your tapes have the between interview songs on them please include in the post because from the back announcing etc you were playing the creme de la creme of music of the time and it would really add to the whole experience… when I listen to these shows I just feel like I’m 18 again - unfknblvabl! Like you I’m looking forward to you finding those other Mentors shows as they really were a great band. All the best & keep posting!
I believe I have that tape with the Mentors. I taped dozens of these shows. I have a show on KCSB in santa barbara called The Doom Corporation. Noon-2 fridays. www.kcsb.org or 91.9FM MAD punk rock from the 80’s like it was meant to be played! Thanks for the inspiration!
