One day (April 29, 1985 to be exact), photographer Glen E Friedman called and said that he had the Beastie Boys with him and he was wondering if he could bring them by the station for an interview. I thought ‘What the hell’ and told him to swing on by. They had just released their debut 12″ for Def Jam that contained the tracks ‘Rock Hard’ and ‘Beastie Groove’. Lots of interesting moments as the Beasties basically clown around for the duration of their visit. Highlight is a ‘live’ version of Beastie Groove. Here’s a nice bit. At the time, this was a huge score for me. An interview with the kings of black metal, Venom. It was conducted poolside on the patio of a rundown Huntington Beach motel on April 17, 1985. Abaddon and Cronos did most of the talking while Mantas did laps in the pool and shouted out occasional phrases. They were in town to play a show at the Palladium along with Slayer and Exodus. The tape recorder I used picked up every external noise including helicopters and splashing water so you might have to strain to hear some passages. But it’s worth it because Abaddon talks some pretty good smack. Well hope you all enjoy it and thanks for listening… ~OG Adam Bomb
